Juliana Montes de Oca

Juliana Montes de Oca (2001) is a Costa Rican fine artist and illustrator living in Toronto, Canada. She specializes in oil and graphite, and is currently very inspired by the natural landscape, organic patterns and the study of material essence. She uses drawing and painting as ways of mapping the passage of time through trace and mark-making, both through figuration and abstraction.

She explores portraiture, still-life and abstract subjects as methods for observation, presence and memory retention. She highlights mundane and everyday moments through an earthy and subtle colour palette. Juliana’s work is mainly concerned with different ways of accessing, translating and communicating subjective lived experiences and internal processes onto the visual medium.

She is also passionate about art curation, art as a driver for community and biology!
